Warning: thieves posing as utility workers

The Police Department warned residents today to be on guard for burglars posing as utility workers. “The burglar contacts an unsuspecting resident and tells them he is with a utility company and the company will be doing work in their backyard,” Sgt. Jeff Stuart said.

The ruse continues with the suspect persuading residents to take them in the backyard so he can show them where the work will be done. That’s when a second suspect enters the home and ransacks it, looking for jewelry, cash and other valuables. “By the time the homeowner returns,” Stuart said, “Both suspects are usually long gone.”

Police suggest residents always ask for identification from workers and make sure you lock doors if accompanying them outside your home. All Southern California Gas Company employees carry identification and wear uniforms with their logos. Residents can call (800) 427-2200 to confirm identities. Southern California Gas Company employees typically only show up for scheduled or requested appointments. Be suspicious if somebody shows up without one.
