Fullerton officer receives American Legion award for outstanding public service

The American Legion Post 29 recognized Fullerton Police Cpl. John DeCaprio for Outstanding Public Service last week during its annual Police and Fire Appreciation Luncheon.

DeCaprio has been with the Fullerton Police Department for more than 25 years and is currently assigned as one of the department’s Homeless Liaison Officers. DeCaprio uses his position as a means to improving the community he serves. Originally designed to deal with calls for service related to complaints about the homeless, DeCaprio has developed his assignment into a proactive position that combines networking of information and services to address not only the short-term issues of homelessness, but also creates long-term solutions, police officials said.

As a result of his success, DeCaprio has developed the position into a model, which is now being used by other agencies.

When not at work, DeCaprio volunteers his free time with the Coast-to-Coast foundation, which provides services to the homeless, including transportation, food, clothing and other resources. According to DeCaprio’s supervisors, “Whether it’s handing out meals or clothing, John immerses himself in the cause for making the lives of others better.”
